If you think it’s a little weird a nutritional supplement business, already selling one of the best Omega 3 supplements in the UK, would recommend other brands?
Here’s our thinking.
Whilst we believe that our product is the best fish oil supplement on the market, it doesn’t cater for every customer's needs. Some of our customers are vegan, some are looking for speciality products containing CBD, others want an omega 3 suitable for kids.
We’ve researched and trialled many of the reputable omega-3 supplement brands in the UK. Unfortunately many were poor quality and not worth the cost of the tub they are shipped in. Others were brilliant.
What follows on this page is the highlights of what we discovered.
1. None of these products are considered ‘cheap’. We did not go out of our way to find the most expensive Omega 3 supplements available in the UK.
It’s simply that the cheaper/budget options are a false economy. To get the benefits of Omega 3, you certainly get what you pay for.
2. Understanding what’s on the label is key. We came across products with lots of hype about the quantity and quality of Omega 3s. But when you dug deeper and read the label, the all important active EPA/DHA omega 3 fatty acids showed the lie.
We wrote a blog post all about this and how much omega 3 per day you need. Our minimum requirement is 50% of the fish oil capsule should be DHA/EPA.
3. Consider your weekly consumption of other omega 3 foods, specifically salmon, mackerel, tuna and sardines. These are high quality sources of omega 3, and other essential nutrients.
If you regularly consume these foods, you may only need 1 or 2 capsules each day to help top up. So a seemingly expensive supplement could very well be great value.
With that out the way, here's the best of the best Omega-3 supplements the UK has to offer:
One of the challenges of Omega 3 supplements for vegetarians and vegans is the plant based sources, compared to fish oil supplements, are generally low in the active DHA and practically non-existent in EPA.
Many of the cheap vegan omega 3 capsules are loaded with cheap ALA (alpha-linolenic acid). We generally don’t need more ALA Omega-3 fatty acids in our diets.
Minami however have created a DHA supplement made from algae. Don’t be put off, as algae are some of the most nutrient dense substances on the planet. Our Lean Greens signature product contains a couple of algae sourced ingredients.
The Minami DHA algae Omega 3 supplement contains just 250mg of DHA per capsule, but for many vegans this is about your best option if a regular fish oil supplement isn't an option.
Or from Amazon,
The price around the £30 mark for 60 soft gels, I’d be recommending at least 2 capsules per daily serving to top up your DHA levels.
Enteric-coated capsules are useful for delivering nutrients to the intestines ensuring they are not released in the acidic environment of the stomach… which stops upset stomachs.
If you’ve found this to the case with fish oils, then Life Extensions Super Omega 3 with enteric coating is ideal for you. It contains 600mg of DHA/EPA fish oil per capsule, making it pass our minimum requirement of 50% DHA/EPA per capsule.
You will find other cheaper enteric coated omega 3s but rarely do they have the requisite amount of DHA/EPA.
You’ll find this Life Extension product here on Amazon
I think it’s odd that a capsule you swallow needs to have a taste. Some people do like to bite into their capsules first, so a flavouring helps make this a little easier.
This product from Natures Best has a sweet orange flavour infused into the capsule. It’s actually quite pleasant.
I had to sit down with a calculator for this product as the capsules are MASSIVE. Most omega 3s come as a 1000mg capsule, this one is 1300mg.
The reason for the calculator was to work out the dosage of DHA/EPA.
Each 1300mg capsule contains 1000mg of DHA/EPA (which works out to about 770mg DHA/EPA per 1000mg) This is just a tiny bit higher percentage than our own Good Fats product with 750mg. The only thing I can’t find out is the source of fish oils.
I couldn’t find this product on Amazon, but it is available direct from their store here.
Over the last few years we’ve seen a significant growth in interest in CBD based products. Now there seems to be everything from gummy bears to coffee infused with cannabidiol (CBD).
Whilst the science is yet to catch up with the anecdotal evidence, many consumers are interested in trying different CBD products.
One of the few CBD Omega 3 products I came across was from our friends at Minami (see the vegan Omega 3 above).
In perhaps the most expensive Omega 3 supplement I’ve found on the market, they’ve added 100mg of hemp oil, giving 10mg CBD per softgel.
So why combine Omega 3 and CBD? It’s mostly due to the brain health benefits of Omega 3 and the alleged similar benefits of CBD.
The noted anxiety and pain relieving effects from taking CBD oil are similar to the effects of consuming plentiful omega-3 supplementation over time.
A patent has been filed in July 2020 off the back of pre-clinical trials on the subject.
At £80 per tub for just 30 soft gels this is by far the most expensive Omega 3 on the market today. And because it’s a CBD product you’ll not find it on Amazon.
It is available directly from their online store.
For our final recommendation I thought I’d see which Omega 3 I would buy from Amazon.co.uk
This turned out to be a harder task than I thought, and shows the Omega 3 lie that I discuss in detail on my blog post here. And it shows why so many people end up buying fish oils that simply don’t meet their needs.
Do a search for Omega 3 on Amazon and there are over five THOUSAND results.
Sorted by ‘featured’ will generally show promoted and best sellers first. Going through the first page of results, pretty much all the products had less than 30% DHA/EPA per capsule. Remember our baseline is 50%. Here’s the problem.
You’ll see a headline like “High Levels of EPA and DHA” and “2000mg per servings”... but when you dig in to the ingredients panel the amount of EPA/DHA is just 300mg per 1000mg capsule.
This situation is seen across pretty much all the products. I had to dig deep into the search results to find one good enough to mention here.
This product is from the US, and despite the large 1200mg capsule, 70% of it is EPA/DHA from anchovies.
Each tub contains just 60 capsules, but for most people 1 or 2 capsules a day is a decent maintenance dose of Omega 3.
At around £23 for a tub, it’s fairly priced too. Grab this product here.
So there you have it, the best Omega 3 supplements in the UK right now.
It has hopefully shown not all omega 3 supplements are the same. Far from it in fact! I strongly encourage you to use your calculator to work out the EPA/DHA content per capsule. Here’s a quick reminder…
For a 1000mg capsule, you need to see at least 500mg (50%) of EPA/DHA
If the capsule size or serving size is not 1000mg, take care in deciphering the actual percentage of EPA/DHA per capsule.
If you have any queries about our own super high quality Omega 3 with 75% EPA/DHA per capsule, head over to our product page here or drop us a quick message to our lovely support team.
We had one simple goal when creating Good Fats from Lean Greens. The highest quality Omega 3 with maximum efficacy.
A Good Fats capsule contains 750mg of EPA/DHA in a 1000mg capsule. Much higher than our baseline 50% requirement, and over twice as much as the top sellers on Amazon!
This means you can get a healthy dose from 3 capsules, getting close to matching the omega 3s you might be missing out from in your diet.
Personally because of my love of fish I take just 1 capsule a day, meaning a £24.95 tub will last 90 days.
