One of the most common questions we get here at Lean Greens HQ is...
In this article, we're going to discuss whether greens powders count towards your five-a-day and whether the five-a-day campaign really exists.
Have you ever wondered where the famous ‘five-a-day’ goal came from? The UK’s ‘five-a-day’ guidelines were developed based on a World Health Organization (WHO) recommendation that consuming 400g of fruit and vegetables per day can reduce risks of chronic diseases, e.g. heart disease, stroke, and some cancers.
The guidelines state that everyone should eat at least five portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables every day.
In 2017, only 29% of adults were eating the recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables per day – and the average (mean) was 3.8 portions per day.
Here at Lean Greens a.k.a Sam and Tim actually tried a little experiment where they attempted to consume their recommended daily intake of fruit and veg.
And do you know what? It was near impossible. Unless they started their day with at least one of their daily recommended portion size of 80g of fruit or vegetables, (who wants vegetables for breakfast?!) Then it became a mission for the rest of the day to consume the other four!
So why should we aim to eat five portions of fruit and vegetables each day?
Fruit and vegetables are part of a healthy, balanced diet and can help you stay healthy. It's important that you eat enough of them.
Evidence shows there are significant health benefits to getting at least 5 portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables every day.
That's 5 portions of fruit and veg in total, not 5 portions of each. A portion of fruit or vegetables is 80g.
The 5 A Day campaign is based on advice from the World Health Organization (WHO), which recommends eating a minimum of 400g of fruit and vegetables a day to lower the risk of serious health problems, such as heart disease, stroke and some types of cancer.

Five portions of fruit and vegetables each day - a very familiar mantra in my house when growing up.
As children, 'you can't leave the dinner table until those peas are gone...'
As adults, we simply struggle to get enough fruit and vegetables in our diet.
But is five a day really enough?
Every day we are bombarded with headlines and social media posts regarding health, fitness, weight loss and the latest quick fix to drop a few pounds.
One quick Google search and you are hit with thousands of contrasting articles and reports on exactly how many portions of fruit and vegetables we should be having each day, and more worryingly all from sources we should be able to trust.
Once it was five - a - day, the next week it was seven, and then it was ten.
The short answer is...
No, it does not count as your five-a-day.
We certainly know the quantity of each ingredient in Lean Greens, but the breakdown of each vitamin and mineral is much harder to quantify.
Because we don't 'add' synthetic variants of certain vitamins and minerals, the actual quantity of each ingested vitamin is lower than you'd get from say a multi-vitamin, but because Lean Greens is only from a raw, natural source it is better absorbed by your body.
Additionally, we use 19 raw, natural ingredients, listing each individual vitamin and mineral would be impractical and misleading. For example, raw wheatgrass alone contains literally dozens of different vitamins and minerals.
The final, most important challenge we have, we have very specific labelling regulations that apply to both the product label and website. If we label incorrectly, we are breaking EU Law!
If we stated each vitamin and mineral we'd need to back this up with studies to prove that every batch of our products contains that amount of each vitamin and mineral.
Technically this is challenging because of our use of raw/natural ingredients, as each batch is affected by crop, seasonality, source, etc. It's a moving target that we can't ever hit.
